General Privacy Statement

  • Introduction

    • The National Informal STEM Education Network (NISE Network) is a national community of informal educators and scientists dedicated to fostering public awareness, engagement, and understanding of current science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).  Nisenet.org is an online digital library of public educational products and tools designed for educators and scientists. NISE Network maintains a website for education professionals (www.nisenet.org) and a portal pages designed for the public (www.whatisnano.org) and (www.explorescience.org) (henceforth "Website").

    • As an element of its operations in pursuit of that mission,we routinely collect contact and other personal information from or about its constituents. We recognizes and respects the need for privacy and security with information of this kind. We are committed to following both the letter and the spirit of all laws governing its operations, including those pertaining to privacy and use of information.

    • The following privacy policy describes our current policies and practices with regard to information collected from and about its constituents. Unless otherwise indicated, all procedures apply to information collected online (via the Internet, World Wide Web, and e-mail) and offline (via postal mail, telephone, fax, and in person). The collective term "constituents" is used to refer to funders, members, and visitors.

    • Notification of Changes to this Policy
      To further its mission and better serve its constituents, we are continually improving and adding new functionality and features to its Website and improving and adding to its existing services and programs. Because of these ongoing changes and the changing nature of technology our information practices will change from time to time. If and when its information practices change, we will post the policy changes to its Website to notify its constituents of the changes and, where appropriate and practical, give them the opportunity to "opt-out" of the new programs and practices. 

  • Information we collect

    • Information Collection and Tracking using Google Analytics
      We use Google Analytics to track use of the website; this information enables us to compile statistics about our site visitors and the use of the site.
    • Information You Provide
      We also collect the personal information constituents specifically provide when they visit our Website, such as signing up for newsletter emails or online workshops. 
    • Financial information
      We do not handle  financial transactions and credit card numbers using this website.
       
  • How we use information

    • Use of Information
      NISE Network currently uses the information it collects about its constituents to provide the products, services, and membership benefits our constituents request; to administer NISE Network programs, to improve services and offerings; to improve NISE Network Website and electronic communications; and to improve operating procedures to better serve constituents.
    • E-Mail Correspondence, Newsletters, and Informational Updates
      E-mail addresses provided to us are used for sending responses to questions and queries, providing registration confirmation, and communicating follow-up information. We also send e-mail newsletters and informational updates to those who request them. Constituents who receive e-mail newsletters and updates may request to be removed from these lists; instructions on how to opt out of newsletters are provided within the message.
    • Cookies
      Cookies are alphanumeric identifiers that are transferred to your computer's hard drive through your Web browser to enable our systems to recognize your browser. We use cookies to store constituents' preferences and record session information such as items that members download. Cookies are also used to record page location to assist with navigation and menus on our site.
       
  • Sharing of Information

    • We are  firmly committed to protecting the privacy of our members. We do not share our membership with any outside entities, except for companies that we must work with to conduct our business. 
    • We do not share constituent e-mail addresses with third parties and do not send unsolicited e-mail.
    • We do not share or sell email addresses or telephone lists with political candidates, parties or campaign organizations.
    • We currently share aggregate information, such as web traffic figures with funders, government organizations, and other groups. This aggregate data, which does not identify specific members or their personal information.
       
  • Children's Privacy on the Web

    • We encourages families to visit the Website together as a shared activity, and we abide by the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). In compliance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, we do our best to delete any information we inadvertently collect from children under the age of 13 who visit our Website as soon as we gain actual knowledge of its existence.   • Rules of Conduct

    • You shall not post on the Website any content which is libelous, defamatory, obscene, pornographic, abusive, harassing or threatening, contains viruses or other contaminating or destructive features, violates the rights of others, such as content which infringes any copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret or violates any right of privacy or publicity, or otherwise violates any applicable law.
    • The Site may not be used by you for any commercial purpose, to distribute any advertising or solicitation of funds or goods and services or to solicit users to join competitive online services. We may, for any reason, remove external links from the Site.


2. Resource Use, Permissions, and Credits policy

  • General Resource Statement

    • The National Informal STEM Education Network (NISE Network) is a national community of informal educators and scientists dedicated to fostering public awareness, engagement, and understanding of current science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).  Nisenet.org is an online digital library of public educational products and tools designed for educators and scientists. The NISE Network maintains a website for education professionalas (www.nisenet.org) and a portal pages designed for the public (www.whatisnano.org) and (www.explorescience.org (henceforth "Website"). It is the desire of the NISE Networkto provide a broad array of digital resources (henceforth "resources" or "resources and products") and to make those resources widely available to our partners for educational use.  The NISE Network also provides links to external websites with resources made by other organizations.
       
  • Use of Materials 

    • It is the intention of the NISE Network to make its resources as accessible and usable as possible. Most products created by the NISE Network are available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike license allowing you to print, download, reproduce, distribute, publicly perform and/or publicly display most NISE Network resources for non-commercial, educational use provided they are credited to the NISE Network, NSF, and, where applicable, the organization or person who developed the resources. You may make adaptations of or modifications to most NISE Network resources for non-commercial, educational purposes, again provided the derivative work is properly attributed and is "shared alike"—available to others under the same license that governs the original work.
    • Some products and resources listed on nisenet.org have different use guidelines that are more restrictive than the Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike license.  You must check the "Permissions" and "Credits" section of each educational product on the website to determine exact rights and permissions.
    • The NISE Network's resources are protected by copyright and trademark laws, and are the property of NISE Network affiliated organizations.

    • We encourage others to both use and adapt our resources and products. However, all products must be appropriately credited.

  • Permitted Use

    • NISE Network resources are intended to be used for non-commercial educational use.
      • Some examples of permitted use:
        • publicly displaying or performing educational products such as exhibits, programs, websites and publications in museums, libraries, schools, and other non-commercial, educational outlets,
        • printing and distributing an activity or handout for an educational workshop,
        • including resources in packets that you create for educational purposes, such as pre- or post-field trip materials, or a teacher's guide to nano,
        • linking from your website to specific resources on the www.nisenet.org website.
           
  • Non-permitted use

    • You may not reproduce, record, publish, modify, or distribute any NISE Network resources or products for commercial purposes. 
      • Some examples of prohibited use: 
        • reproductions of NISE Network resources or products, in a commercial publication or product to be sold or provided in exchange for a fee,
        • using NISE Network images to promote a commercial program, product, event, or activity,
        • serving NISE Network web pages on your Website,
        • using a NISE Network activity, publication, or other product without properly crediting the person or groups that developed the product, whether for educational or commercial purposes.
  •  Links to the Website

    • The NISE Network welcomes links to the Website. Permission to create a link to the Website is not required. However, we do reserve the right to request removal of a link from any Web page we believe does not further the NISE Network's mission. You may NOT enclose pages from the NISE Network Website within a frame set on your site.
       
  • Links from the Website to External Sites

    • The Website may provide links and pointers to Internet sites maintained by others. The NISE Network is not responsible for the availability of any other site to which the Website link. Nor does the NISE Network endorse or take responsibility for the content, advertising, products or other materials made available through any other site. Under no circumstances shall the NISE Network be held responsible or liable, directly or indirectly, for any loss or damage that is caused or alleged to have been caused to you in connection with your use of, or reliance on, any content, goods or services available on any other site.

  • Trademarks

    • NISE Net, NISE Network, nisenet.org, and their logos, are trademarks of the NISE Network.
    • Adaptations or modifications of NISE Network resources or products ("third party works") shall be appropriately credited, however, the NISE Network trademarks may not be used in connection with a third party work in a manner that is likely to cause confusion among users.

    • These terms and conditions apply to your use of all of the Website and services operated by the NISE Network. These terms and conditions do not apply to your use of external websites to which the Website links.
