Wheeling High School, a public, four-year comprehensive high school with a STEM focus (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) that opened in 1964 and graduated its first class in 1966. Wheeling is one of the six schools in Township High School District 214. The community is predominately middle income residential, with light industry providing a major portion of the tax base for the entire district. The Village of Wheeling is 28 miles Northwest of downtown Chicago, and has approximately 40,000 residents. The school serves Wheeling and sections of Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Mount Prospect, Northbrook, and Prospect Heights..

Wheeling High School offers an extensive and comprehensive academic program including 24 advanced placement courses, dual credit college offerings in business, engineering, and architecture, certifications in computer technology, health careers, manufacturing, and automotive technology, along with over 75+ co curricular experiences. In addition, student use of technology is embedded throughout the school experience with 15 computer labs, 450+ computers, laptop loaners, and smart boards, as well as media projectors in every classroom and extensive use of online learning communities. Wheeling High School students, in partnership with Northwestern University’s iLab project, have remote access to the science labs of universities around the world. Our focus on career certifications, college partnerships, and technology are just a few of the ways students gain an edge in preparing for and accessing post secondary opportunities.

In the fall of 2010 Wheeling High School was officially rededicated as a STEM school and admitted as an institutional member of the National Consortium for Specialized Secondary Schools of Mathematics, Science, and Technology—one of only three in Illinois. STEM is an acronym for science, technology, engineering, and math. As a STEM school, we focus on these subjects to prepare all students to think critically and solve complex problems, adapt to new technologies, and communicate effectively to a variety of audiences—all skills required to succeed in a global 21st century economy. Through STEM, Wheeling High School integrates all disciplines including the arts, languages and humanities in an interdisciplinary approach, offering students the opportunity to transfer and apply knowledge and skills across the curricular spectrum rather than solely within isolated disciplines, providing a foundation of knowledge applicable beyond the realm of math and science alone.

At the foundation of our student success is our professional education staff including former engineers, attorneys, certified public accountants, business owners, contractors, and professional musicians, most holding graduate level degrees from a diverse background and over a third speaking a second language. Each is committed to preparing students for their future with a global perspective through supportive relationships, rigorous coursework, and a curriculum relevant to the new economy.
