Mixing Molecules

Mixing Molecules is a full-body immersive simulation demonstrating the collision of molecules at the nanoscale. The digital interface allows visitors to use their shadows to “push” animated molecules that are projected onto a screen in a darkened room. Visitors can manipulate the collsion of the molecules, speeding or slowing the formation of new compounds. The piece demonstrates the connection between the nanoscale - where individual molecules collide with each other - and the macroscale where many small random collisions appear as one larger, consistent motion.

Creating Nanomaterials

Creating Nanomaterials is an interactive, multimedia component of the Intro to Nanotechnology exhibit package that demonstrates how scientists are using the ability of molecules to self-assemble to create consumer goods with surprising properties. Visitors place and observe “molecules” on an air hockey table. When the air hockey table is activated, the “molecules” hover and assemble into patterns all by themselves—just like molecules in nanomaterials.

Quarked! - Adventures in the Subatomic Universe

Quarked! - Adventures in the Subatomic Universe brings subatomic physics to life through a multimedia project including an interactive website, a facilitated program for museums and schools, and an educational outreach program.

Animated segments focus on the adventures of Ushi (up-quark), Danny (down-quark), and Harold (up-quark) as they take on the invisible world of particle physics in their proton subatomic universe vehicle (SUV). Each Quarked character has an animated human counterpart who learns ways to solve everyday problems through the Quarked! micro-world adventures.

Nanotube Models

“Nanotube Models” is a facilitated tabletop program aimed at educating the public about the properties and applications of carbon nanotubes. Visitors will be able to use Molecular Visions model kits to build carbon nanotubes. The models can be started by museum staff and added onto by visitors, or pre-built to be used as a display. The models can also be accompanied by other NISE Net programs that focus on carbon nanotubes to increase the engagement and enhance the models.

Molecularium Molecules to the Max

The Molecularium® Project at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has developed educational cartoon films that explore the world of atoms and molecules. The videos are aimed at young people, families, and school groups. Additional resources include images and an educator's guide.
